There is no question that the public school system in the United States both requires continuance, but also radical change.
Reduction of the student-teacher ratio, focus on English, math, science and history are keys to improvement. Too many students fail to understand basic English structures. More students fail at mathematical equations applicable to a multitude of work environments. Less importantly, basic scientific lessons are often not learned. Finally, fundamental historical principles are lost on many students. These core areas must be the key emphasis with a student-teacher ratio no more than fifteen to one.
In addition, whatever financial resources are required to have all students have a hot breakfast and a hot lunch as part of the school day are good financial resources to expend. School should commence with a 7:30 a.m. breakfast and normal instruction ends at 3:00 p.m. Participation in useful extracurricular activity might also earn a student a free hot dinner. High school students could earn wages by helping out in school kitchens.
A well-fed and educated child populace is as important to advancing our country and democracy as any other endeavor. Bullying cannot be tolerated – with severe consequences to the bully enforced.
As the goals of basic studies are met, expansion into other areas of interest may occur: the trades, music, philosophy, etc. can be entertained. However, critical thinking function must be key.
The ideal curriculum would involve the following: English, math, science, social studies, piano, judo and chess. Piano stimulates a variety of brain functions and teaches focus as well. Judo is a physical activity that focuses on defense, but also enables physical well-being. Chess involves critical thinking, planning and strategy. Those ancillary activities in addition to the core studies will make an amazing class of students.
